One of the first 'real program examples' in any programming language is invariably an image viewer. This is pretty crazy when you think how many free ones there are on the web, so here's the best one anyway:
Irfanview is an excellent image viewer, with support for most formats. This tool is far superior to the Kodak Image viewer often included with Windows, and does include some basic editing functions.
Despite being a rather odd acronym, the GIMP is an excellent graphics editing program, and constitutes the Open Source equivalent to Adobe Photoshop. In case you're wondering it stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program.
